Call for submissions
We invite short video submissions (under seven minutes) from those engaged in practical applications of metacognition in teaching and learning. Videos will be embedded as a new resource in the IwM website from the new IwM YouTube channel. The aim is to complement the blog posts with regular video content and broaden the IwM audience. Guidelines, suggestions, and review process can be found below. If you’re interested in submitting video content, please contact Improve with Metacognition at improvewithmetacognition@gmail.com.
Guidelines for video submissions:
- Videos should be under seven minutes in length. (A series of videos will be considered, but no single video should exceed seven minutes in length).
- Creators should assume a broad, lay audience, and craft content accordingly.
- Videos can come in different forms (such as one person guiding the audience through an issue, an interview conversation between two people, or a compilation of short segments on a given topic).
- Minor video editing support will be available, e.g., stitching segments together, overlaying slides, cutting unused material to preserve final takes.
General suggestions:
- Keep the connection to metacognition front and center (while people visit IwM for a variety of reasons, the site is ultimately about metacognition. Whenever possible, you should avoid hiding the broccoli in the lasagna. Instead, let’s celebrate the connection to metacognition!).
- Keep it focused (What’s the one big idea, takeaway, or question being addressed?)
- Keep it engaging (How does the video help your audience with an issue they can readily recognize?)
- Keep it visually interesting (how might images, graphics, or limited text drive home your central point?) Be sure to cite the source of your images. If you are looking for free images, two possible sites are Pixabay and Unsplash.
Submission and review process will proceed as follows:
- Step 1: Review the example script plan and corresponding video on metacognition
- Step 2: Submit Your Plan to improvewithmetacognition@gmail.com. Potential video creators should submit a title, a draft narration script (note our sample script is our final one), and a brief description of the plan for visuals (such as talking heads, images, text slides, green screen), a brief description of the recording and production plan, and a plan for any supporting documentation to be included as links (such as text documents referred to in the video or bibliographic references). Finally, include your planned timeline. See an example plan. [insert link]
- Step 3: Plan Review & Feedback Cycle. At least two of the Improved with Metacognition reviewers will offer feedback on the submission within approximately two weeks. It is possible that IwM editors will ask for a round of revisions at this point. (It is important that everyone is on the same page before videos are produced to minimize the need for video editing later).
- Step 4: Creators will produce the video according to their plan and in collaboration with IwM editors.
- Step 5: Final Production, Approval, & Release. IwM editors will review produced videos and add IwM intro and closing wrapper. Before the videos are uploaded to the site and the corresponding IwM YouTube channel, IwM editors will send videos to the creator for final approval. Creators will be notified when the video goes live.
